Johns Hopkins Electrical and Computer Engineering Assistant Professor Yu Sun has received an NSF CAREER Award, one of the National Science Foundation’s highest honors for early-career faculty.
The CAREER Award will support Sun’s project, “Provable, Flexible, & Scalable Integration of Physical and Diffusion Models for Probabilistic Imaging.” The work aims to move beyond traditional imaging approaches that produce a single reconstructed image, toward methods that capture a full range of possible interpretations. By modeling uncertainty directly, these approaches can help researchers and clinicians better assess how much confidence to place in an image and where ambiguity remains.
Sun, who is also a member of the Data Science and AI Institute at Hopkins, is recognized for his work advancing computational imaging, an area focused on reconstructing meaningful visual information from complex or incomplete data. His research integrates machine learning, computer vision, optimization, and physics to build more reliable and interpretable imaging systems.
