CMOS image sensors growing 11% CAGRDavid MannersFriday 12 October 2012 08:06 The CMOS image sensors market is expected to grow at an 11% CAGR in revenue in the 2012 – 2017 period, growing from $6.6bn in 2012 to $11bn in 2017, says Yole Développement. Tablets & automotive applications will boost CMOS image sensor sales and drive the growth of the market, says Yole. Mobile handsets accounted for ~ 65% of total shipments in 2011. Three fast emerging applications of significant size should drive the growth of the market to an expected CAGR over 30%: Tablets, Automotive, and Smart TV.

Tablets are poised to boost CIS sales in the consumer market because a majority of tablets now feature one or two cameras, similarly to mobile phones. “We expect CIS (CMOS image sensor) sales to generate nearly $1.5bn in 2017,” says Yole’s Paul Danini. Car manufacturers have begun equipping cars with multiple cameras, pushed by upcoming regulations promoting greater safety.
