During my recent trip to Ukraine, I had the opportunity to chat with an ultracapacitor/supercapacitor and EV battery expert, Vadim Utkin, CEO of Yunasko. Below are a couple of quite interesting videos from that.

In this first one, Vadim mentions a combined ultracapacitor and lithium-ion battery technology Yunasko is working on. Before I started recording, he had mentioned that the company had previously partnered with a French company on a technology that combined ultracapacitors with fuel cells. Of course, as he stated in the video, fuel cells are not currently competitive, and no one can really project what will happen too far out in this cleantech arena. Nonetheless, I got him to at least talk about the benefits and minuses of lithium-ion batteries versus fuel cells. Check it all out here:

In this second video, Vadim discusses lithium-air batteries a little bit, including their main issue — cycling limitations. He also jokes a bit about how excited people have been getting about graphene, which is an exciting material for many reasons, but which is far from mass production. However, if it does ever get to cost-effective production, it could help lithium-air batteries with their cycling issues.

I intend to follow up with Vadim in the future to get more detail on what his company is working on. Stay tuned!
